Adobe sucks on Oracle brain drain for HTML5 game gain • The Register

Adobe seems to be juicing its software gaming credentials against HTML5 by grabbing some hard-core Sun Microsystems talent as they slip out Oracle’s back door.

Four senior and respected members of the old Sun Hotspot Java Virtual Machine team jumped clear of Oracle during March and April, and all four have landed at Adobe.

The four are Paul Hohensee, who has been named principal computer scientist at Adobe, John Pampuch, who grabbed a spot as director of Flash VM, and Igor Veresov and Tony Printezis, who were both appointed as senior computer scientists at the software-maker.

A further two Sun VM brains – Charlie Hunt, a former performance lead engineer, and YS Ramakrishna – have also left Oracle, for Salesforce.com and a small private software firm respectively.

Until their exit, they’d occupied similar posts inside Oracle as technical staff directing HotSpot or working on engineering performance. Hohensee joined Sun in 1999 and Ramakrishna in 2002 while Veresov, Pampuch and Printezis joined in 2005.

The group’s members all boast deep experience in garbage collection, memory management, compilers, HotSpot development and in languages – prized among anybody interested in squeezing out micro sub seconds of performance from their software.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Hohensee is working with Adobe managers and engineers on technical direction and delivery of a “high performance and extremely reliable product” and to “contribute to overall Flash technical direction”.

Oracle inherited the team along with HotSpot when it acquired Sun in 2010. Adobe, meanwhile, has them working on its ECMAScript-based ActionScript language and associated VM, which is part of Flash Player.

In November 2011, Adobe shook up its Flash roadmap in the face of competition from HTML5 and growing resistance to Flash on devices, thanks to Apple’s deceased co-founder and chief exec Steve Jobs. Adobe has recast Flash as the platform for something very specific, gaming, instead of being a generic media player for broad use everywhere.

The ActionSctipt VM had been part of Flash but with Flash being sidelined either the ActionScript VM must perform better minus Flash, or ActionScript must work better on other VMs: chiefly, HotSpot.

To help, Adobe is revisiting ActionScript, which has gone virtually unchanged since its introduction in 2006. “Adobe believes it is time to revise the language to carefully steer its further evolution towards greater expressiveness as well as productivity and performance gains,” the firm said.

The idea is to make ActionScript better suited to the high-performance and hardware utilisation requirements of gaming, and to improve developer productivity. The wording of the roadmap plays right into the skills of the ex-Oracle team – a complete embrace of static typing and hardware-oriented numerics.

This is big: having killed Flash for mobile, Adobe is now focusing on the browser and device hardware. ActionScript is up against its ECMAScript cousin, HTML5, which everyone from browser-makers to tablet-lovers wants to get with. The planned changes are so extreme that Adobe has warned that existing apps might not work with the new ActionScript.

While Adobe will have recognised the value of the quartet it has hired, there was no word on their LinkedIn profiles on why they’ve all jumped clear of Oracle all at the same time. Oracle has certainly seen a number of former Sun brains leave, the biggest being Java daddy James Gosling.

It is not unusual for employees acquired by a new owner to leave and it’s possible this group have left in the wake of the vesting of any share options they might have received from Oracle. Shares in such acquisitions are allocated in chunks over a given time period to help retain the talent. Vesting periods are typically six months, a year, two years and four years. ®

News Flash: There’s a Middle Ground Between “Porn” and “Prude”

I’m always torn when confronted by the aggressive stupidity of many internet commenters.  On the one hand, when one “feeds the trolls,” they tend to respond with even more aggressive stupidity.  On the other hand, the prevalence of certain arguments is evidence of a troubling mindset and paints a misleading picture of public sentiment.  to some folks, literally any action by a conservative Christian must be opposed, and every form of sexuality must be displayed.  Don’t believe me?  Read the utter nonsense on display in the comments on the Tennessean’s story about Books A Million’s sexuality display – nonsense made all the more remarkable by the fact that the Tennessean’s comments aren’t anonymous.  (My favorite is from a person who identifies herself as employed by United Methodist Publishing who says, “[W]hy are these people so afraid of sex and educating their children about it?”)

To some people, apparently, that’s the same thing as hating sex, repressing your children, and laying the cornerstone of theocracy.  Here’s one of my favorite comments:

“Because Gays and Lesbians are disgusting monsters that you have to hide from your children, right? [Note: the most offensive picture was definitely heterosexual] Not people that have their own experience to write about and cater to. Heterosexist swine. and what harm comes from your kid knowing that sex exists at a young age. It is a beautiful thing created by God, and this Victorian attempt to cover it up is exactly what has created our hyper-sexualized culture. we should bask in sex as the natural and essential element of human life and relationship and then it wouldn’t become something teenagers are driven to do at a young age and go through lengths to hide their lives from their parents.  It is attitudes like this that emulate the failed Prohibition, you are only fostering a mindset for your children to pursue sexual education without enlightened guidance from parents and other caring adults in clandestine environments like stolen porno rags and internet forums.”

Unbelievable.  Isn’t there a middle ground between porn and prude?  are people so blinded by their hatred for Christians and love of sexual indulgence that they must defend even public displays of sex acts?  Remember, Nancy was not advocating that Books-A-Million remove a single product from its shelves.

I’m increasingly believing that when it comes to the malicious comments and inane reasoning that dominates much of the internet, (to quote the late Justice Louis Brandeis) “Sunlight is the best disinfectant.”  Sometimes bad ideas have to be addressed, and small-minded hatred must be exposed.  Critically, Christians can and should respond to bad speech with better speech.  we simply can’t abandon the virtual public square to anyone, much less the most ill-informed, vicious, and vile members of the secular (or even religious) Left.

Consider the Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash For Your Canon Digital SLR Camera

If you take lots of pictures indoors and want good quality, the Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash is something to consider for your Canon Digital SLR. even though it is regarded as costly, many people who ordered found it was well worth the investment. The flash is perfect for people who enjoy taking those special family moments. If you intend on getting the flash, there are a few benefits and drawbacks to take into consideration.

The recycle time is very fast when you take a number of burst shots a second. The flash is a lot more than capable to stay ahead of your photo taking, not like the built-in flash. The TTL is great and the photos are usually exposed beautifully. this powerful flash has manual controls and, if needed, can override the TTL without a hitch. it is possible to take 400 to 500 images before the AA rechargeable batteries run out. The high speed sync enables you to snap images with a flash at any shutter speed though there is some reduction in the flash’s distance. If you want the flash bounced off of ceilings or the wall behind you, it can be done because of the 90 degree tilt, and the 180 degree turn.

It has an amazing locking mechanism as well as its durable metal foot. with the rear sync, you could have well-defined images for indoor shots using any lens, even at 1/3 of a second or less. When snapping shots in low lighting, the Speedlite is able to find your target and focus without the irritating test flashes. The Canon Speedlite produces a red light as opposed to those irritating test lights when shooting in low light. Many of the downsides concerning the flash are, if you have big fingers, you will have a tough time pushing the buttons. Yet another problem is that the flash is big and adds weight to the camera however, you will have better looking photos.

Buying this flash is a good investment if you are seriously looking to improve your photography. There are lots of uses of this flash, and even when outdoors you can start seeing shadows, that your flash can lighten up. Ridiculously overexposed or underexposed pics won’t happen, since the flash does an admirable job of calculating the right amount of light to expose the photograph. with the ability to make adjustments, you’ll enjoy working with light to shine off the walls or ceilings.

If you are simply a casual photographer, you can get incredibly exposed photographs by leaving the flash in automatic mode. you can focus much more quickly with external flash, than the built-in flash of the camera, and this alone makes the Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras worth buying.

Web Design Company Saudi Arabia, HostGee Web Design Launches Flash Banner Services – Virtual « PimpMySite – web design and online systems

Web design and development company in Saudi Arabia, HostGee.com launches flash banner services in across the Saudi Arabia and beyond.

Makkah, Saudi Arabia, may 13, 2012 –(PR.com)– Web Design Company Saudi Arabia specializes in developing quality driven and spectacular looking flash banners, flash templates, flash intros, logos, and slideshows for websites. these can also be used or placed as an ad on any other website. to make flash banners even more engaging, they use animations as well as a host of other flash compatible scripts. This would make the banner visually outstanding thus attracting more viewers and traffic to a website.

The development and implementation of flash banners on websites has grown drastically over the past few years. This is because when compared to a static—dead looking banner, flash banners are more exciting, compelling, and eye catching. A comparison would reveal that flash banners are much more interactive and can highlight key messages or story board in a more effective manner. With the introduction and integration of flash players, the inability of Google to index flash has been eradicated.

At HostGee Web Design, web design company Saudi Arabia, they have the right set of skills and expertise to develop all kinds of flash enabled banners as well as other marketing tools that would leverage the potential and capability of any website. they can help enhance the visibility of the website by embedding flash logos, intros and banners into a website. For your convenience, they offer the following flash-based tools and products:

Flash WebsitesFlash Into Web PagesFlash AnimationsFlash Screensavers

Flash Enabled E-BrochuresCorporate Flash PresentationsAnimated Flash Banners And LogoFlash Banners And Ads As Per Specifications

At HostGee, they also have a high level of expertise in developing flash based components and tools with the help of video files that can be embedded into a website. these files can be played, paused, and stopped as per the preference of the user. these Flash video files would have voice over capabilities for better interactivity.

Some of the reasons why one should choose them for your flash banner development:

Smaller Sized Flash File: they keep the size of the flash file as small as possible so that it can be easily downloaded and viewed with no hassles. while doing so they would not compromise with the quality of the images, however they would limit the usage of images and use soothing colors and gradients as fillersBetter Readability: they would use adequately sized fonts that would enhance the readability. to increase overall effectiveness they would use font sizes that would lay an impact on visitorsCreating Buttons: Visitors would always want to feel that they are in control. For their convenience they would create a close button through which they can close the flash as per their convenience. This becomes most useful when a flash banner opens up and expands when the mouse is rolled over itKeep A Check On Animation And Time Of Video Clips: they would limit the time of any video file that you would want embedded in a flash banner. Since most visitors do not have time to go through web elements it is imperative that the time of the video should be limited. they would also include a pause button on the flash based video which would make the visitor feel that he or she is in control.

Fake Flash Player Malware Targets Android Phone Users

Fake Flash Player Malware Targets Android Phone Users

Cybercriminals have been regularly upon the surveillance to have the quick sire from gullible marks. New Apple Safari disables ancient, insecure Flash versions

Apple has released Safari 5.1.7, fixing four security vulnerabilities. These are the same holes that were patched in iOS 5.1.1 earlier this week.

At the bottom of the About the security content of Safari 5.1.7 page, Apple mentions this tidbit:

Note: In addition, this update disables Adobe Flash Player if it is older than 10.1.102.64 by moving its files to a new directory. This update presents the option to install an updated version of Flash Player from the Adobe website.

In other words, Apple has started disabling ancient Adobe Flash Player versions (10.1.102.64 and older) in the latest release of its browser. I say “ancient” because Flash Player version 10.1.102.64 was released in November 2010.

Apple offers the following explanation:

Out-of-date versions of Adobe Flash Player do not include the latest security updates and will be disabled to help keep your Mac secure. If Safari 5.1.7 detects an out-of-date version of Flash Player on your system, you will see a dialog informing you that Flash Player has been disabled. the dialog provides the option to go directly to Adobe’s website, where you can download and install an updated version of Flash Player.

If you need to re-enable an out-of-date version of Flash Player, you can do the following:

  1. Navigate to the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins (Disabled) folder.
  2. Drag “Flash Player.plugin” into /Library/Internet Plug-Ins.
  3. If the browser is running, quit and restart it.

Adobe seems pleased with the new feature:

In the meantime, we welcome today’s initiative by Apple to encourage Mac users to stay up-to-date: With the Apple Safari 5.1.7 update released today, Apple is disabling older versions of Flash Player (specifically Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and earlier) and directing users to the Flash Player Download Center, from where they can install the latest, most secure version of Flash Player.

While this appears to be a good move, it really isn’t anything to write home about. the Apple users who have Flash Player version 10.1.102.64 are very unlikely to be the same people who would go and download the latest version of Safari.

It’s a start though. now that Apple has the feature built-in, the company can change the version number to something much newer, like something from last year.

Adobe currently gives Windows users the option to install updates automatically, without user interaction. the company says a Mac version of the Flash Player background updater is currently in beta and will be available very soon, but wouldn’t give a specific date to look forward to.

‘Hunger Games’ flash game with Israeli roots hits the jackpot

N

EW YORK (JTA) — It’s post-apocalyptic America and you’re in District 12 of Panem. with your bow and arrow, you are helping Katniss Everdeen hunt for meat and berries to bring back to your family. President Snow, the evil dictator, is planning the next Hunger Games, in which children are placed in an arena to fight to the death — and you might be chosen.

This is the world that Funtactix, a company founded in Israel, has created on Facebook along with Lionsgate and “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins.

With social network games — typically played online through a social network such as Facebook or on a mobile device — replacing the console system as the standard in recent years, Funtactix finds itself well positioned.

The Hunger Games Adventures is just the latest conquest for a company that has been receiving plenty of hype from gaming experts for integrating social gaming with big brand marketing. Last year, Funtactix partnered with Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. to create Facebook games centered on “Rango,” “Mission: Impossible” and “new Boyz.”

Now it seems to have hit the jackpot: Funtactix is the first company to launch a Facebook game released on the same date as the movie on which it is based.

Half a billion people play social games, according to Funtactix CEO Sam Glassenberg.

“Traditional console-based movie games reached only those hard-core gamer movie fans that both loved the film and owned a specific gaming console,” he said. “With social games there is no barrier to entry, no expensive game console required.”

Funtactix began as a startup company in Tel Aviv in 2006, and now has offices in new York, Jerusalem and Los Angeles.

So how did this young company born in Israel, which is second only to Silicon Valley in its per capita concentration of startups, connect with big names like Paramount, Warner Bros. and Lionsgate?

“Convincing a film studio or director to bring their upcoming film to the medium of social games is no easy task,” Glassenberg said.

But his team of Israelis had decades of combined experience building games for movies and was able to parlay existing relationships with Hollywood.

The company has carved “out a unique niche,” said Scott Steinberg, who heads the technology consulting firm TechSavvy Global.

Funtactix may be making it big at the box office, but its technology is standard, according to Ron Weaver, a faculty member at the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy.

Several Facebook games have been set up in conjunction with TV shows, and content and technology updates are common for all games, as there are no barriers on the Facebook platform.

“Funtactix’s implementation of console-quality graphics within Flash is not a lone effort,” Weaver told JTA. “Kudos to Funtactix for helping to lead the charge, but fortunately they are not alone.”

Glassenberg, who had worked for Microsoft, says one of the reasons he left the company to join Funtactix in 2008 was to help build the games industry in Israel.

“From personal experience, I know that Israel has the potential to make a huge contribution to the global games industry,” he said, noting that the $100 billion-a-year industry will serve to enhance the nation economically and culturally, providing education and talent retention.

His Zionism and Funtactix’s Israelis roots were among the things that drew him to the company.

“Israel has a great deal to contribute to the global games industry. Funtactix is just scratching the surface,” Glassenberg said. “We have established a reputation in Hollywood for Israeli game development. We hope this will serve as a catalyst for a much larger games ecosystem in Israel.”

Indeed, he’d like to see Funtactix pave the way for other Israeli startups.

Pointing to the powerhouse Google, which recently announced its plans to set up an Israel-based “incubator” to host and fund about 20 entrepreneurs, Glassenberg says big companies want access to Israeli talent.
